Onboarding design and interaction could help new users quickly engaged with their new-installed app on its first minutes. This is like a tour guide, so the onboarding design shall be fun and relax, informative but use everyday words rather than formal, a step-by-step approach of interaction design, and overall it should be easy to follow.

The contradictive aspect might arise when we talk about advanced users. This type of user is likely impatient and tend to use the app right away because they already know what it is or at least they confident on what they’re going to do. As a results, this onboarding phase could slow them down, annoying or worse, hurts their first impression of the app.

Windows Phone 7 spotted in Microsoft’s booth at Pesta Blogger 2010’s event (Epicentrum Walk Rasuna Said, Jakarta - Oct 30). I impressed by their interface and its so-smooth transition effects. In this case, (in my opinion) they dare to be different compared to major mobile OSs: Android & IOS4. Well, I’ll be looking forward for more comprehensive sneak peek.

I think I should act fast, but not necessarily in a rush. This site should have a new skin, no longer relevant in many aspects, especially with what I’m trying to achieve now. Time to makeover. Redefine the information architecture & draw new functional wireframe, to create a better information flows. Refreshing the visual displays, take out all the illustration elements to make it lighter, faster page loading. Clean-styles, and I shall play more better with a whitespace.

Sometimes I want to put one or more links in my email message. I know, its not a big issue. I can just simply select the text, then I hit the link icon. An overlay dialog window then popped-up on my screen. Here, I can type the URL by typing directly to the web address form field or just copy/paste it from elsewhere. So good so far.

But, sometimes I feel not so sure. Does the link still active or broken? Did I mistyped the url? Nah, the built-in functionality of link checker in this Gmail dialog window now comes to help. By clicking the Test this Link button (actually, its just plain text link, not a button), then I shouldn’t have to worry anymore. Brilliant.

Well, it might just a simple tool, but effectively help the user. Good UX!

Embeding Google Fonts in Tumblr is Easy

So you want to embed non-default system fonts for your Tumblr blog? Its easy. You can do it by embeding the Google Font Directory service for free. Simply pickup the font you like, then click Get The Code tab. Then, all you have to do is copy the code, e.g like this (I choose Droid Serif font):

Now, back to your Tumblr dashboard, then click the Customize menu. Select the Theme menu, then hit the Use Custom HTML button to switch to the fully customize mode. Paste the code anywhere inside inside your header area (between … , let say after the tag.

Save it, then you’re good to go. View the changes by refreshing your Tumblr blog. If you don’t see any changes, maybe you should clear the browser cache or re-check your styles.

This isn’t sort of system error, disaster or something. Its just a ridiculous system notification I found in Flickr after I made a batch changes for my Flickr Set. Apparently I have to say THANKS for the stuff to Flickr. Definitely bad UX. Useless.
